Rohit Sharma made his Test debut at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens against West Indies, in Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell Test series. He scored 177 runs on debut, and followed that up with an unbeaten 111 in the second Test at his home ground, the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. 

In October 2019, during the third Test against South Africa, Sharma achieved two significant milestones: scoring his 2,000th run in Tests and notching his maiden double century with a remarkable 212 in the first innings of the match.

Furthermore, he was appointed as the vice-captain of India’s Test squad for the 2020 tour of Australia, taking over from Cheteshwar Pujara. In September 2021, Sharma scored his first overseas Test century by scoring 127 runs against England at The Oval, simultaneously crossing the threshold of 3,000 runs in Test cricket.

In February 2022, Sharma took over the captaincy of India’s Test team from Virat Kohli. A two-match series against Sri Lanka was his first assignment. 

In his Test career thus far, Sharma has amassed a total of 12 centuries. Remarkably, India has emerged victorious in all 11 Test matches where Rohit has produced a century. His highest Test score of 212 was recorded against South Africa at the JSCA International Stadium in 2019.

Rohit Sharma’s T20I career has also seen him break many records. From his debut in 2007 to the present day, Sharma has delivered several important innings in T20 cricket. He is the seventh-highest run-scorer in T20 internationals, and the second-highest among Indians, with 11482 runs in 437 matches at an average of 30.78 and a strike rate of 134.33.

He has scored five centuries in T20 internationals, and three more centuries in other T20s.Three of Sharma’s five T20I centuries have been achieved while leading the Indian team. This achievement puts him on par with Babar Azam, who also has three centuries to his name while captaining his side.
