Players With Most Centuries in T20 Cricket

Scoring a century in T20 cricket is a remarkable feat due to its fast-paced nature. In just 120 balls, batsmen are expected to bat aggressively yet cautiously. Unlike traditional formats, where players have more time to settle, T20 demands quick run-scoring.

With more and more T20 leagues being played around the world, the frequency of centuries in the format has also increased. Over the years, we have seen many centuries in tournaments like the Indian Premier League, Big Bash League and Pakistan Super League among others. So who are the batsmen with the most centuries in T20 cricket? Let’s find out.

1. Chris Gayle 

Chris Gayle’s dominance in T20 cricket is unparalleled. The Jamaican holds numerous records in T20 cricket, including the most centuries and the highest individual score. His ability to consistently hit massive sixes has earned him the title of “Universe Boss.” Gayle’s mere presence in a T20 match strikes fear into opposing bowlers. He has played for various franchise teams around the world, including IPL and PSL. Overall, Gayle has scored 14562 runs in 463 T20 matches at a strike rate of 144.74. This includes a record 22 centuries. 

2. Babar Azam 

Renowned for his elegant batting style and consistent performances, Babar Azam has emerged as one of the leading run-scorers in the T20 format. His stellar performances in domestic T20 leagues and international matches have solidified his reputation as one of the premier batsmen in the T20 format today. With more than 3500 runs, Babar is the leading run scorer in Pakistan Super League history. Overall, he has scored 10373 runs in 287 T20 matches at a strike rate of 129.58. He has scored a total of 11 centuries in the format.

3. Michael Klinger 

Third on the list is Michael Klinger, with eight centuries in 206 matches. Klinger has played in the BBL for Adelaide Strikers and Perth Scorchers, and also in the IPL for the now-defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Despite not having a substantial international career, his contributions to domestic cricket are highly valued. Overall, Klinger scored 5960 runs at a strike rate of 123.08. 

4. Virat Kohli 

Widely regarded as one of the best batsmen of his generation, Virat Kohli’s ability to dominate bowlers in all conditions and against all types of bowling makes him a formidable opponent. Kohli’s consistency in scoring runs, particularly in chasing down targets, has earned him immense praise. Kohli has scored eight centuries in his T20 career so far. Four of these centuries came in IPL 2016 for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

5. David Warner 

David Warner has also scored eight T20 centuries. A regular in the IPL and BBL, Warner has amassed 12065 runs in his T20 career of 370 matches, at a strike rate of 140.17. His highest score in T20s is an unbeaten 135 off 69 balls that came in the Champions League T20 in 2011. 

6. Aaron Finch 

Following Warner on the list is his fellow Australian teammate Aaron Finch, who has scored eight T20 centuries in 387 matches. Finch has played for multiple teams in the IPL, including Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders, and has also played for the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL. Finch’s best knock in the format is 172 which came against Zimbabwe in a tri-series. 

7. Luke Wright 

Luke Wright, who was briefly associated with the IPL franchise Pune Warriors, has also been seen in tournaments like the BBL and BPL. In 344 T20 matches, the 39-year-old has scored 8526 runs at a strike rate of 142.81. This included seven centuries and 46 half-centuries. Wright scored a  44-ball hundred against Hobart Hurricanes in the inaugural BBL in 2011-12, which was the fastest century at the time in the league.

8. Brendon McCullum

Brendon McCullum, the first batsman to score a century in the IPL, scored a total of seven centuries in his T20 career. In 370 matches, the flamboyant batsman scored 9922 runs at a strike rate of 136.49. His unbeaten 158 for KKR in the first-ever IPL game in 2008 remains McCullum’s best knock in the format. 

9. Glenn Maxwell

One of the most explosive T20 batsmen, Glenn Maxwell has scored seven centuries in 422 matches, and will be looking to add to the tally when the IPL 2024 gets underway. Maxwell’s best knock in the format is an unbeaten 154 from 64 balls, which came for the Melbourne Stars in BBL 2022. Maxwell’s knock was laced with 22 boundaries and four maximums. 

10. Rohit Sharma

On the 10th spot is India captain Rohit Sharma with seven centuries in 426 matches. Sharma is the highest run-scorer for the Mumbai Indians, with 5314 runs at a strike rate of 129.76. His best knock in the format is an unbeaten 121 from 69 balls, which came against Afghanistan earlier this year. He smashed 8 sixes and 11 fours during his knock.

At the top of the list, Glenn Maxwell and Rohit Sharma both stand tall with five centuries each. Maxwell, known for his explosive hitting, has amassed 2468 runs in 106 matches at a remarkable strike rate of 155.51. Similarly, Rohit Sharma, the elegant opener, boasts 3974 runs in 151 matches at a strike rate of 139.97.

Following closely behind are Suryakumar Yadav, Sabawoon Davizi, Colin Munro, and Babar Azam, each with three centuries to their name. Yadav’s aggressive approach has earned him four centuries in just 60 matches. Davizi, despite playing fewer matches, proved his mettle with three centuries and a strike rate of 138.93. Munro, the hard-hitting New Zealander, has notched up three centuries in 65 matches with an overall strike rate of 156.44. Meanwhile, Babar Azam has three centuries in 109 matches.
