With the ongoing T20 World Cup in its final week, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now looking at the IPL Auction for the next season. Bengaluru has been the preferred venue for an IPL auction, but there are reports that suggest that Istanbul could well be a competitor. Reports also suggest that the IPL Governing Council will meet after the T20 World Cup final (November 13) to decide the dates of the IPL auction.
It should be mentioned here that the upcoming auction will not be as big as last year’s mega-auction and the 10 teams have already been asked to submit the list of players that are planning to retain by November 15.
At IPL 2022 Auction, the salary purse for all the teams was set at Rs 90 Crore. However, reports suggest that this year it will be Rs 5 Crore higher than last year. It will also be dependent on the trade-ins and transfers between teams and the budget would either increase or decrease accordingly. As things stand right now, December 16 could well be the date when the IPL mini-auctions could be held.
When will IPL 2023 start?
As has been the trend, IPL 2023 is expected to start in the last week of March, but the exact date would be decided at the IPL governing council meeting after the conclusion of the World Cup.
This season, the IPL will revert to its original home and away formats. It was already confirmed by the then BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. Owing to the Pandemic, last few IPL seasons was played in select venues.
Gujarat Titans, led by Hardik Pandya, won the IPL title last season in their maiden appearance. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings fared miserably and we could see quite a few changes to both squads. Punjab Kings has already named Shikhar Dhawan as their new captain. Reports also suggest that they could release former Punjab captain Mayank Agarwal ahead of the mini-auctions.
