To be on the list of lowest score in IPL history is not a record any team would be proud of. The Royal Challengers Bangalore find themselves on the list of top 10 lowest score in IPL history a total of four times. Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals find themselves on the list twice each. 

The two most successful teams in IPL history, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, are not a part of this list. 

The record for the lowest score in IPL is held by RCB, who were bowled out for just 49 runs by KKR in IPL 2017.

1. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 49

On 23rd April 2017, RCB was bundled out for a paltry 49 runs in just 9.4 overs against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. None of the RCB batsmen managed to reach double digits, with the highest score being 9 by Kedar Jadhav. KKR’s pace attack, led by Nathan Coulter-Nile, Colin de Grandhomme, and Chris Woakes, tore through the RCB lineup. This match remains a significant low point in RCB history.

2. Rajasthan Royals – 58

In a match against RCB on 18th April 2009, held in Cape Town, RR was skittled out for 58 in 15.1 overs. Anil Kumble’s magical spell of 5 wickets for 5 runs in 3.1 overs dismantled RR, who failed to cope with the South African conditions. Tyron Henderson, Yusuf Pathan and Ravindra Jadeja scored 11 runs each while none of the other batsmen could score in double digits. RCB went on to win the match by a margin of 75 runs. 

3. Rajasthan Royals – 59

On 14th May 2023, RR faced RCB in Jaipur and were all out for 59 in 10.3 overs. Wayne Parnell and Michael Bracewell delivered devastating spells, leading RCB to a crushing victory. The RR batting lineup collapsed dramatically, unable to handle the disciplined bowling attack, resulting in another entry in the unwanted record books. Shimron Hetmyer scored 35 runs, while five batsmen were dismissed for ducks. 

4. Delhi Daredevils – 66

Delhi Daredevils faced Mumbai Indians (MI) on 6th May 2017 at their home ground in Delhi, and were bowled out for 66 in 13.4 overs. The pace duo of Kagiso Rabada and Pat Cummins couldn’t save Delhi from the batting collapse. Mumbai’s bowlers, led by Harbhajan Singh and Karan Sharma, made quick work of the Daredevils’ batting lineup. Mumbai Indians went on to win the match by a huge margin of 146 runs. 

5. Delhi Daredevils – 67

On 30th April 2017, Delhi Daredevils were dismissed for 67 runs in 17.1 overs by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in Mohali. Sandeep Sharma was the star with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for just 20 runs. The highest individual score of 18 runs came from Corey Anderson, while Karun Nair and Kagiso Rabada scored 11 runs each. This match underscored the inconsistency that has plagued the Delhi franchise over the years.

6. Kolkata Knight Riders – 67

In the inaugural season of IPL, on 16th May 2008, KKR was bowled out for 67 in 15.2 overs against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Rohan Rajesh, Shaun Pollock and Dwayne Bravo spearheaded the Mumbai attack, making early inroads and never letting KKR settle. Captain Sourav Ganguly and Ajit Agarkar top scored with 15 runs each while eight of the KKR batsmen scored in single digits. This early match set the tone for many unpredictable results in IPL history.

7. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 68

On 23rd April 2022, RCB was bowled out for 68 in 16.1 overs by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Brabourne Stadium. Marco Jansen’s fiery opening spell and T Natarajan’s precision bowling left RCB reeling. The highest score of 15 runs came from Suyash Prabhudessai, while Glenn Maxwell scored 12 runs. In reply, the Sunrisers chased down the target in only nine overs and went on to win the match by nine wickets and with 72 balls to spare. 

8. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 70

RCB find themselves on the list yet again. On 23rd March 2019, they managed only 70 runs in 17.1 overs against Chennai Super Kings CSK at Chennai. Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir, with three wickets each, spun a web around the RCB batsmen, with none of them finding a way to counter the spin duo. Parthiv Patel scored 29 runs while all the other RCB batsmen, including Virat Kohli, scored in single digits. CSK won the match by seven wickets and with 14 balls to spare.

9. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 70

In a match against Rajasthan Royals on 26th April 2014, held in Abu Dhabi, RCB was bundled out for 70 in 15 overs, equalling their own record. Pravin Tambe’s leg-spin bamboozled the RCB batsmen, securing an easy victory for RR. Tambe picked up four wickets while Kane Richardson picked up two. For RCB, the highest individual score of 21 runs came from Virat Kohli. RR went on to win the match by six wickets and with 42 balls to spare. 

10. Kings XI Punjab – 73

On 14th May 2017, Kings XI Punjab was bowled out for 73 runs in 15.5 overs by Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in Pune. Shardul Thakur and Jaydev Unadkat’s disciplined bowling, which yielded five wickets, dismantled the Punjab batting order. Axar Patel top scored for Punjab with a knock of 22 runs to take them to a total of 73, which RPS chased down in 12 overs.

    While the IPL has seen seven high-scoring matches, especially in the on-going IPL 2024, the tournament has also seen several low-scoring innings, highlighting that T20 cricket is not just about the batsmen, but about the bowlers too equally.
