National Games 2022 is taking place in Gujarat. It started on September 27 and will continue till October 10. National Games is a multi-disciplinary sporting event and is being played after seven years. The last edition was played in Kerala back in 2015.
The National Games is technically a biannual event and it was to take place in Goa back in 2016. However, there were a number of factors that delayed the event and then the Covid pandemic put a halt to any preparations. Gujarat stepped in as a replacement in 2022 and has been a successful host so far.
Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, unveiled the mascot and anthem for this edition of the National Games at the EKA Arena, TransStadia in Ahmedabad. Interestingly, the mascot for these games is Saavaj which essentially means ‘lion’ in Gujarati. The anthem for these games has been sung by Sukhwinder Singh. ‘Judega India, Jitega India’ is the philosophical underpinning of the anthem.
National Games 2022 will take place across six cities in Gujarat – Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Bhavnagar, and Rajkot. However, Track Cycling is the only event that will take place at the Velodrome in Delhi. Approximately 8,000 athletes will take part in 36 disciplines across all sports.
