1. Rohit Sharma – 264 runs

Rohit Sharma’s incredible innings of 264 runs against Sri Lanka on November 13, 2014, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata remains the highest individual score in ODI cricket. In this match, Sharma’s majestic knock included 33 fours and 9 sixes, which propelled India to a mammoth total of 404/5 in their allotted 50 overs.

In reply, the visitors were bowled out for 251, as India went on to win the match by 153 runs. Sharma was awarded the Player of the Match award. This was the second double century of his ODI career, after the one against Australia in 2013. He scored 209 runs, which were laced with 16 sixes and 12 fours.

2. Martin Guptill – 237 runs*

Martin Guptill’s unbeaten 237 runs against the West Indies on March 21, 2015, at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, stands as the second-highest individual score in ODI history. Guptill’s innings was characterized by his aggressive batting style, as he smashed 24 fours and 11 sixes during his memorable knock.

His phenomenal display of power hitting played a crucial role in New Zealand posting a commanding total of 393/6 in 50 overs, which they successfully defended after bowling out the opponents for 250. Guptill won the Player of the Match award. 

3. Virender Sehwag – 219 runs

Virender Sehwag’s breathtaking innings of 219 runs against the West Indies on December 8, 2011, at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore ranks as the third-highest individual score in ODI cricket. Sehwag’s explosive batting propelled him to reach the milestone in just 149 deliveries, including 25 fours and 7 sixes.

India scored a total of 418 runs, in reply to which the visitors were bowled out for 265. Sehwag’s aggressive approach to batting revolutionized the opening role in limited-overs cricket, inspiring generations of cricketers to follow suit.

4. Chris Gayle – 215 runs

Chris Gayle’s knock of 215 runs against Zimbabwe on February 24, 2015, at the Manuka Oval in Canberra is the fourth-highest individual score in ODI history. Gayle’s destructive batting display included 10 fours and an astonishing 16 sixes, as he effortlessly dismantled the opposition bowling attack. Gayle also picked up two wickets in that game as the West Indies went on to win the match by 73 runs via the DLS method.

5. Fakhar Zaman – 210 runs*

Fakhar Zaman’s unbeaten innings of 210 runs against Zimbabwe on July 20, 2018, at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, stands as the fifth-highest individual score in ODI cricket history. He smashed 24 fours and 5 sixes during his monumental knock, guiding Pakistan to 399 – 1 in 50 overs, in response to which Zimbabwe managed to score just 155. 

6. Pathum Nissanka – 210 runs

In February 2024, Pathum Nissanka became the first Sri Lankan batsman to score a double century in ODIs. This came in the first ODI of the series against Afghanistan in Pallekele. The opener delivered a stunning unbeaten innings of 210 runs from just 139 balls. His knock included 20 boundaries and eight sixes, propelling Sri Lanka to an imposing total of 381/3. Nissanka’s innings now stands as the sixth-highest individual score in ODI history.

7. Ishan Kishan – 210 runs

In December 2022, Ishan Kishan joined the list of batsmen with the highest individual score in ODI cricket. Kishan scored 210 runs off 131 balls in Chattogram against Bangladesh.

His knock was laced with 24 fours and 10 sixes, and helped India score 409 for 8 in 50 overs. This is also the fastest double-century in the 50-over format. India went on to win the match by a huge margin of 227 runs. 

8. Rohit Sharma – 209 runs

Rohit Sharma scored 209 runs against Australia in Bengaluru in November 2013. This was his first double century, a feat that he would later go on to repeat twice. He scored 209 off 158 balls, displaying a wide range of shots.

The double century was marked by 14 boundaries and 16 maximums and came at a strike rate of 132.27. With the help of this knock, India posted a total of 383, and went on to win the match by 57 runs. 

9. Rohit Sharma – 208 runs 

Rohit Sharma’s third entry on the list comes from his unbeaten innings of 208 runs against Sri Lanka on December 13, 2017, at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. Sharma’s innings was a display of sheer class and composure, as he struck 13 fours and 12 sixes to guide India to a formidable total of 392/4 in 50 overs. India went on to win the match by 141 runs and Sharma, who became the first batsman to score three double-centuries in ODIs, took home the Player of the Match award. 

10. Shubman Gill – 208 runs 

In January 2023, Shubman Gill joined this elite club of batsmen by becoming the fifth Indian to achieve a double century in ODIs. Gill’s feat occurred during an ODI match against New Zealand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Not only did he notch up a double century, but he also set a new record as the fastest Indian cricketer to reach 1,000 ODI runs. Gill’s innings of 208 runs off 149 balls was adorned with nine sixes and 19 fours.
