Buraco Rules
Being a game created in South America, Buraco was quickly embraced in Brazil, being widely spread in family and friends gatherings. It is very common to see groups of people playing Buraco, or Canasta, as it is also known, in squares or bars in various regions of the country.
The rules of the Buraco game are simple, and even the most resistant people to card games feel motivated to learn this game.
The main objective of Buraco is to form sequences of cards of the same suit and canastas, which will earn you many points in the end.
Rules and Scoring in the Buraco Game
- The rules are simple. It is usually played in doubles, with four players.
- Players take turns between drawing cards from the deck (face down) or from the discard pile of cards discarded by other players (face up).
- Most importantly, players can lay down their cards and show their sequences of the same suit as they are composed until they form a canasta.
- When a player has no cards in hand, it is said that they “Knock”. In this case, they pick up a stack of 11 cards from the dead pile.
- The game is won by the team that manages to knock twice having a clean canasta on the table.
- Canastras are sequences of at least 7 types of cards of the same suit. They can be
- Clean Canasta, formed without the jokers. Worth 200 points.
- Dirty Canasta, formed with the jokers to replace a missing card. Worth 100 points.
- 500 Canasta, formed with a Clean Canasta, with cards starting from Ace and ending with K (King). Worth 500 points.
- Royal Canasta, formed by the complete sequence from Ace to Ace (14 cards). Worth 1000 points.
- Remember that the number “2” card can replace any card in a sequence.
- The final point count will determine the winner:
- At the end of the game, the team that knocked gets an extra 100 points.
- If a team fails to knock even once during the game, they are penalized 100 points.
- Count the points for each team. Remember that each canasta has its own score. Thus, with a canasta, the player has: the points of the canasta itself + the points of the cards.
- Sequences that do not form canastas only contribute the points of their cards.
- Finally, subtract the points of the cards that each player still held in hand when the game ended.
- If the game ends due to the absence of cards to draw, i.e., without a second knock, then the remaining cards in the players' hands are disregarded. In this case, they will not deduct points from the team.
Count Points with Precision
Pay attention to the values of each card to count points correctly:
- Cards 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 = 5 points.
- Cards 8, 9, 10, J (Jack), Q (Queen), K (King) = 10 points.
- Card 2 = 10 points.
- Card A (Ace) = 15 points.
- Joker (if used) = 20 points.

No. The dead pile contains 2 stacks of 11 cards, one for each team. When a player takes the dead pile, the next dead pile can only be taken by a player from the other team.
Yes, if the canasta is dirty with the use of the '2' card as a joker. In this case, to clean the canasta, the '2' card must be moved to its normal position in the sequence (between the Ace and the 3) and the card it replaced must be added back in its place.
