Checkers is played on a square board consisting of 64 alternating light and dark squares. Each player starts with 12 colored game pieces, typically red and black, which are placed on the dark squares of the first three rows on their side of the board.
The game is played by moving your pieces diagonally forward on the dark squares. Regular moves are made one square at a time. However, if a piece reaches the opponent's end, it gets crowned and gains the ability to move both forward and backward.
When one of your pieces is adjacent to an opponent's piece and there is an empty square beyond it, you can jump over the opponent's piece to capture it. Multiple captures can be made in a single turn if there are consecutive opportunities.
When a piece reaches the last row on the opponent's side, it becomes a 'king' Kings have the ability to move both forward and backward, enhancing their strategic value.
