How to Play Buraco
The game of Buraco originated in the 1940s in Uruguay and quickly gained popularity in other countries, reaching Chile, Peru, Brazil, and Argentina. Over time, Buraco became more refined. Later, in the 1950s, the National Commissions of the United States and Argentina officially published the “Official Canasta Laws,” making the game even more popular.
Buraco uses two decks of 52 cards and is not very difficult to learn. Like any game with many rules, it requires practice for you to learn all its peculiarities. The good thing is that Buraco, or Canasta, Canasta or Biriba, as it is known, depending on the region, is a very enjoyable game, so you won't have difficulty finding a group of friends to play with.
Important Tips for Buraco Game
- Buraco is a game of intelligence and strategy, so don't forget to use your logic to make your moves, choosing your cards wisely.
- Carefully observe the cards that are discarded. If the opposing team picks them up, it can reveal something about their play and the cards they have in hand.
- In Buraco, attention, and especially memory, are essential. Always stay alert and memorize both the figures of the cards and their suits.
Steps to Play Buraco
- In the game of Buraco, you will use two decks, optionally including the jokers.
- Two people play (against each other) or four (two doubles).
- After shuffling, the cards are passed to the player on the right. This player separates the deck, forming two piles of 11 cards each (the dead pile).
- With the remaining cards, 11 cards are dealt to each player.
- There will still be some cards left, which will be placed on the table, face down, so they can be bought during the game.
- The game rotates clockwise.
- During the game, each player can buy a card and optionally lay down on the table a sequence of at least 3 cards of the same suit.
- To end the turn, the player must discard a card on the table (discard pile), face up.
- The next player can buy all the cards from the discard pile or one card from the deck, as preferred.
- The team that forms the most points with the cards laid down in sequence wins.

The Clean Canasta: which does not use jokers.
The Dirty Canasta: which uses a joker or the “2” card to replace a missing card.
The 500 Canasta: which starts from Ace and reaches King.
The Royal Canasta: which is a sequence from Ace to Ace of the same suit, with 14 cards.
