The full form of SRH in the IPL is Sunrisers Hyderabad. Unlike the original eight teams that started off in 2008, SRH made its entry in 2012 and played its first season in 2013. Despite being a late entry, SRH has consistently performed well in recent years.

As per 2024, SRH was led by Pat Cummins and over the years and number of high-profile international players have donned the orange jersey. David Warner has been a standout performer for the franchise, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been a key Indian player. Rashid Khan and Jonny Bairstow are other notable names that have been part of the side over the years. They have now moved over to different sides in the IPL. 

SRH was formed in 2012 after the now-defunct Deccan Chargers, with Kalanithi Maran of the SUN Group taking charge as the new franchise owner. The team’s home ground is the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

SRH’s Journey in the IPL

IPL 2013: SRH made a strong debut season – they won 10 out of 16 league games and made it to the playoffs. They finished fourth after losing to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator.

IPL 2014: The 2014 season was challenging for SRH – they could win only six out of 14 games and ended in the sixth-place finish.

IPL 2015: SRH were better in 2015 as they managed to win seven games, but once again finished sixth on the points table.

IPL 2016: SRH, under the captaincy of David Warner, won their maiden IPL title in 2016 – they ended third in the league stage and became the first side to win the title after finishing outside the top two. 

IPL 2017: SRH were impressive in 2017 as they made it to the playoffs. They finished fourth in the league but were eliminated by Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eliminator.

IPL 2018: 2018 was another impressive year for SRH – the topped the league with nine wins, but then lost to Chennai Super Kings in the final. 

IPL 2019: SRH had a rather inconsistent 2019 season – they won six games and finished fourth – they were then knocked out by Delhi Capitals in the Eliminator.

IPL 2020: SRH found some great momentum in the back end of the tournament when they won three matches on the bounce to make it to the playoffs. However, after they beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Eliminator, they went down to the Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 2.

IPL 2021: This was one of the worst season for SRH – they finished last in the points table in the IPL. 

IPL 2022: Another dismal show in the IPL. Led by Kane Williamson, SRH could never really find momentum and finished eighth in the league.

IPL 2023: For the second time in three seasons, Sunrisers Hyderabad finished last in league. Kane Williamson was let go and Aiden Markram took over captaincy, but it did not have any bearing on the results. 

IPL 2024: Pat Cummins took over the captaincy and the side made it to the final where they were beaten by the Kolkata Knight Riders.
