Creating Sets Without Jokers

A set without a joker card would look something like this: a set of fives consisting of the five of spades, the five of clubs, and the five of diamonds. It is also possible to form a set using four cards. For example, a group of four sevens from different suits.

Including Jokers in Sets

An example of a set that includes a joker card would be the eight of clubs, the eight of spades, and the king of diamonds. In this case, the king of diamonds is used as a wild card joker to complete the set.

• A valid rummy declaration can include a maximum of two sets, excluding two sequences. Always check if the declaration contains a single pure sequence.
• It is not mandatory to form a set in rummy; players have the choice to opt out.
• Making multiple sets in a declaration is allowed. However, having more than two sets renders the declaration invalid and results in an 80-point deduction.

Creating Valid Declarations with Sets and Sequences:

The next step is to understand how to use sets and sequences to create a valid declaration. After distributing the cards to the players, the first stage is organizing them, which helps in planning the moves.

Let's consider the following cards as an example: J, Q, and K of diamonds, 2 and 3 of clubs, 6 of clubs and 6 of hearts, 9 and 10 of clubs with a printed joker, and 7 and 8 of spades with 10 of hearts.

In this case, the first combination forms a pure sequence, and the third combination forms an impure sequence where the missing card is replaced by a printed joker.

• Turn 1: Suppose you choose the 6 of diamonds on your first turn. This allows you to complete the third group, forming a set of six. Since you don't have any more cards to form a combination, you can discard the 10 of hearts. Now you have J, Q, and K of diamonds, 6 of hearts, clubs, and diamonds, 2 and 3 of clubs, 9 and 10 of clubs with a printed joker, and 7 and 8 of spades.
• Turn 2: Let's say you draw a 4 of clubs on your second turn. By doing so, you can complete the second group and turn it into a pure sequence. Now you can discard the 8 of spades. Now you have J, Q, and K of diamonds, 2, 3, and 4 of clubs, 6 of hearts, clubs, and diamonds, 9 and 10 of clubs with a printed joker, and 7 of spades.
• Turn 3: Suppose you draw a wild joker on this turn. You can use it in place of the missing 6 of spades, completing the set of six. Discarding the 7 of spades will allow you to make a valid declaration. Now you have J, Q, and K of diamonds, 2, 3, and 4 of clubs, 6 of hearts, clubs, and diamonds, and 8 of spades, 9 and 10 of clubs with a printed joker. In this case, the 8 of spades acts as a wild joker, replacing the 6 of spades. This is undoubtedly a valid declaration, and if you make it before your opponents do, you win the game.

Invalid Declarations Due to Incorrect Rummy Sets:

In WinZO Rummy, a player's declaration must be valid according to the rules. A declaration should consist of at least two sequences, including one pure sequence. Including more than two sets in a valid declaration is not allowed. However, sometimes we overlook minor details when creating sets, which can invalidate our declaration.

For example, if you declare with 5, 6, and 7 of clubs, Q and K of hearts with a printed joker, 4 of hearts, two 4 of diamonds, and 9 of spades, 10 of spades, printed joker, and Q of spades, the declaration would be invalid. This is because the cards 4 of hearts, 4 of diamonds, and 4 of diamonds do not form a valid set. The declaration would have been valid if there had been a 4 of spades or a 4 of clubs instead of the second 4 of diamonds.

Value of Valid Rummy Sets:

In rummy, points are considered negative and undesirable. The winner of the game is the first player to make a valid declaration and earn zero points. To make a valid declaration, a player must have at least two sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence, and the remaining cards should be arranged in sets and sequences. However, a valid declaration can only include a maximum of two sets.

If all other game rules are followed, both a valid set and a valid sequence carry zero points. The cards in the losing players' hands at the time of the winner's declaration determine the penalty points they incur.
